«La compañía de los hombres», de Jerome Rothenberg

Traducción de Juan Carlos Villavicencio

Aquellos que son hombres de verdad
acarician sus cuchillos & esperan
debajo de las rocas, con sus armas
bien dispuestas.   Descerebrados
sus ojos, como los ojos
de reptiles, ajustada
la carne sobre el hueso,
la sangre como nieve
teñida de rosado.   Es
la compañía de los hombres
la que da forma al mundo,
algunos que son amigos
& otros
que están ahí por deporte.
Mastican & se quitan los dientes.
El fin de la contienda
los castra. La vida es muerte
& la muerte
es lo que se ha perdido,
recuperada
& perdida otra vez.
Hombres que son hombres de verdad
frotan su piel
con muerte, un engrudo
de grasa & de ceniza.
Se maravillan con
el árbol astillado
tras ellos,
los papeles esparcidos,
el vino derramado,
el cielo una burbuja.
Irán a la guerra
& tú, porque
tu tiempo se acerca,
esperarás maravillado
mientras tiemblas por nacer.

The Company of Men

Those who are real men / stroke their knives & wait / under the rocks, their guns / at ready. Mindless / their eyes are, like the eyes / of reptiles, tight / the flesh over the bone, / the blood like snow / dyed pink. It is / the company of men / that shapes the world, / some who are friends / & others / in it for the sport. / They chew & pick their teeth. / The end of strife / unmans them. / Life is death / & death / is what is lost, / retrieved, / & lost again. / Men who are real men / rub their skin / with death, a paste / of fat & ash. / They marvel at / the splintered tree / behind them, / the papers strewn about, / wine spilled, / the sky a blister. / They will go to war / & you, because / your time is drawing nigh, / will wait in wonder, / trembling to be born.
